When undertaking landfill design there is a number of common steps that designers take to reach the end product, whether it is a design of a new landfill cell or capping of a completed landfill. Designers diligently assess design criteria, develop constraints, assess risks, develop models, undertake calculations, prepare specifications and design drawings, which are all reviewed internally then submitted to client to be reviewed and issued for construction.
However, the client (or owner) often overlooks a key aspect, third party review, even though it is being undertaken in other industries to ensure constructability and compliance with up to date guidelines and development requirements. This can lead to the following issues:
I have observed projects where the design looked straight forward but when it came down to construction the design had to be changed as it was difficult to construct, which led to time delays and increase in construction costs and in one example extremely costly legal action.
Iolar recommends that designs and specifications be reviewed by a third party that can put “fresh eyes” over the project and design at the final draft stage to ensure the constructability of the design. Any comments can be provided back to the designer by the client before the design and specifications are issue for construction. Iolar has the necessary experience and capability to undertake these third party reviews. Please contract Christian Lisle for further information.

- Designs, although look good on paper, in reality are difficult or impossible to construct leading to design variations and time delays and cost increases;
- Designs that are not appropriate to the situation due to the an assessment that perceived risks are more likely to happen than what is realistic;
- Budget blowouts due to over complication of the design;
- Design that once constructed are difficult to operate long term or maintain due to impractical design or modifications during construction
- Design not constructed properly due to an incomplete construction package;
- Failure of design.
